History of Bellerose Animal Hospital
Dr. Leo Karmin & young Dr. Andrew Karmin
Discharged from the army in 1946, Dr. Leo Karmin established Bellerose Animal Hospital in the developing borough of Queens NY. Although it was founded as a veterinary hospital for small animals (dogs and cats), he continued to examine and treat farm animals including goats, cows and horses until the early 1950's. From its inception, Bellerose Animal Hospitals philosophy promised progressive medicine and compassionate pet care with an emphasis on the alleviation of pain and suffering in animals and a commitment to guide and educate pet owners.
Dr. Karmin taught his staff well. The hospital remains loyal to this practice ethic allowing us to become a beacon to the veterinary community, recognized and respected by other veterinarians by their referrals to Bellerose Animal Hospital for their patients' care. Dr. Andrew Karmin and the veterinarians, technicians and veterinary medical staff at Bellerose Animal Hospital are proud to provide high-quality medical, surgical, and dental care for pets in all areas of Queens, NY and western Long Island including Bellerose, Elmont, Queens Village, Flushing, Hudson, Floral Park and South Floral Park.
The first veterinary associate joined Bellerose Animal Hospital in 1961 and started the training process for many outstanding veterinarians. Dr. Andrew Karmin, now the hospital director, joined the veterinary practice in 1969, continuing the Karmin vision for continued growth and advancement in the expanding pet care field.
Since 1962 Bellerose Animal Hospital has undergone several renovations, the latest in 1995, to improve the hospitals physical appearance and, more importantly, to improve the quality of care for your pets. The year 1995 saw the addition of a new veterinary surgery suite, new radiology and procedures rooms and expanded critical care facilities including in-house laboratory capabilities. Throughout Bellerose Animal Hospital's history, the investment in medical and surgical technology has been a priority, allowing us to keep abreast of the ever-increasing demands of sophisticated veterinary medicine and surgery.
Both Drs. Karmin have also required continuous improvement in the veterinary hospital staff's capabilities. This applies to our doctors and our technicians--licensed veterinary professionals who are the backbone of our practice. Together they create a strong medical team, each with specialized training and capabilities that mesh to meet our rigorous veterinary health care standards.
A new concept arrived in the 1970's. Veterinary specialists were for the first time incorporated as consultants in our practice. Today, specialists in veterinary radiology, veterinary ultrasound, veterinary internal medicine and veterinary surgery come to Bellerose Animal Hospital on a regular basis. Recognition of our standards of excellence was first awarded to us in 1973 by the (AAHA) American Animal Hospital Association--certifying Bellerose Animal Hospital to its highest level of veterinary hospital certification--a standard that the hospital consistently maintains.
