Medical Alert: Canine Influenza

Flu season has arrived - for dogs as well as humans

The canine influenza vaccine is a "lifestyle" vaccine, and is not recommended for every dog.

In general, the vaccine is intended for the protection of dogs at risk for exposure to the Canine Influenza virus, which include those that either participate in activities with many other dogs or are housed in communal facilities, particularly where the virus is prevalent.

If your dog is boarded frequently or goes to dog runs, day care or the groomer, he/she may be a candidate for the vaccine. Dogs that benefit from canine influenza vaccination include those that receive the kennel cough (Bordatella/parainfluenza) vaccine, because the risk groups are similar.

Please consult with the veterinarians at Bellerose Animal Hospital to determine whether you dog's lifestyle means he or she is at risk for the canine influenza virus and if the vaccine is appropriate for your pet.
